Phenol Plant, 50,000 TPY, Howell Process, 5 Reactors

Description

  1. Overview
    1. This plant uses the Howell process.
    2. Shut down in 2013.
    3. Two oxidizers replaced in 2008.
    4. PFDs and P&IDs available.
    5. The complete process description is available.
  2. Process
    1. Cumene reacts with oxygen obtained from compressed air at 85-105 degrees Celsius and atmospheric pressure in the Honeywell method.
    2. The reaction forms a compound known as cumene hydroperoxide (CHP).
    3. The reaction usually takes place over several reactors in series.
    4. There are 5 reactors at this plant.
    5. The CHP concentration leaving the final reactor is between 30 to 40%.
    6. The concentration is normally no higher due to the formation of undesirable byproducts.
