Description Overview This plant uses the Howell process. Shut down in 2013. Two oxidizers replaced in 2008. PFDs and P&IDs available. The complete process description is available. Process Cumene reacts with oxygen obtained from compressed air at 85-105 degrees Celsius and atmospheric pressure in the Honeywell method. The reaction forms a compound known as cumene hydroperoxide (CHP). The reaction usually takes place over several reactors in series. There are 5 reactors at this plant. The CHP concentration leaving the final reactor is between 30 to 40%. The concentration is normally no higher due to the formation of undesirable byproducts.
