  1. Overview
    1. Stax Unica single roll bathroom tissue wrapper for the production of individually wrapped bathroom tissue rolls in paper or poly wrap.
    2. The single wrapper Unica is a packaging machine for hygienic rolls that is economical and efficient, dedicated to packing single toilet rolls in poly film or paper.
    3. This wrapper is easy to use, fully servo driven, and controlled by the most advanced motion controller Omron NJ-501, which allows an extremely reliable production process.
    4. It reaches production speeds of more than 200 packs/minute, with very low maintenance cost and compact dimensions, ideal for mid-range converting lines.
  2. Principle Of Operation
    1. Rolls come by one (optional two) channel conveyor; they are launched by servo controlled launcher(s) into the infeed section.
    2. Carbon bars convey the rolls on the elevator, which leads them into the folding area. The foil positioning section brings the packaging film directly above the rolls by a servo controlled system of flat belts.
    3. The folding process is the traditional one, with fully servo controlled folders and counter folders.
    4. The overhead pack transport section moves the pack to the bottom sealer (in case of poly wrap), while side plates maintain the folds (just made) in position.
    5. In the case of poly wrap, a series of air blasts fold the bottom flaps just before the pack is taken over by the out feed sealing section to complete the wrapping cycle.
    6. In the case of paper wrap, there is an additional servo controlled system for tucking paper inside the core after the side folding tools.
    7. All motions and functions are controlled by the integrated motion controller.
  3. Sections Description
    1. Infeed conveyor: one (two) channel motorized conveyor with modular belts, 3.5 meters long, controlled by inverter, for roll accumulation. The group includes a series of photo-eye sensors for controlling position and detecting the presence of rolls.
    2. Rolls infeed: the group is composed of a roll launcher including 1(2) "dousers", each servo driven, to realize from single lane pack configuration. A dragging unit is composed by a system of carbon bars and serves to deliver the rolls at the elevator. The distance between bars is variable and depends on roll length. The movement of this machine group is servo motorized.
    3. Elevator: lifts the product from the in-feed level to the out-feed level. The movement of the elevator plate is controlled by a connecting rod-crank servo motorized system. The elevator movement is optimized according to the roll size to be elevated.
    4. Unwinding: the group is divided in two sub-sections. An unwinding unit able to unwind foil reels, controlling the unwinding speed according to the machine cycle and the "dancing" roller position. A foil feeding system able to feed and check the proper foil length, to perforate it, to separate the pre-perforated foil and to place it exactly in the middle of the elevation system. The group is completely controlled by four servo motors and is also able to correct errors due to inaccurate measures according to the position of the mark registration, which is printed on wrapping material.
    5. Folding: the group is composed of a servo controlled head folder which executes the pack side folds, together with a fixed counter head folder. The head folders and counter folders are unchangeable with respect to the pack height (within the range of the product machine height). A servo controlled bottom folder with belts stretches the short bottom flap of the package; the group is equipped with a system of belts that work in counter-phase to avoid foil following the movement of the folder during its withdrawal phase; the belts’ speed is controlled by an AC motor with inverter. A servo controlled bottom folder stretches the long bottom flap of the package. There are two different systems of folders according to the material used for packaging.
    6. Transport: the transport of the package during the folding process is done by overhead trolleys; they are equipped with quick-release teeth and moved by two pairs of chains with adjustable offset. The pitch between trolleys is fixed. The side guides are made of self-lubricated synthetic polymer, making the motion very fluid and without frictions.
    7. Sealing (for poly wrap only): bottom sealer is servo controlled, performs sealing of the bottom flaps previously set up by two bottom folders. Speed and temperature are balanced to secure perfect seals (with a constant sealing time) according to machine speed, size range and different types of poly film. Out-feed sealing unit is motorized with a couple of AC motors that transmit motion on two Teflon belts. Each tape runs on a heating plate heated by several resistances. The plates’ temperature is measured by a couple of sensors (one on each side) and is controlled by the temperature controllers. The speed of the sealing belts depends on pack configuration and production speed.
    8. Human machine interface: control panel (HMI) is placed on the electrical cabinet of the machine and its functions are: monitoring, checking and adjusting technical functions for optimized performances; format parameters to be stored, adjusted and selected for ease format change-over; displaying the necessary trouble-shooting and fault diagnostic data.
