Originally manufactured by Fiat as TG50D5 under license to Westinghouse (presently a Siemens company)
Owned, installed and operated by an Italian utility company at a former CHP power station in Turin, for three years before being dismantled due to a decision to increase plant capacity
Sold to the present owner who had them upgraded by Siemens to W701DS models with 127.8 MW nominal capacity each
Siemens also fully overhauled the units to zero hours
The 701DS technology is one of the most widespread middle size engines (100-140 MW) for power generation that can also operate on heavy fuel oil (HFO)
Specifications
Nominal net site output of each unit is 127.8 MW at ISO conditions
32% efficiency in open cycle and up to 52% efficiency in combined cycle
Dual fuel capability on natural gas and distillate oil (also heavy fuel oil, following pre-treatment)
Equipped with hot stacks (by-pass) when used for simple cycle operation
Each unit is located in a separate enclosure and is equipped with its own inlet filtration system, anti-icing system and water injection for NOx abatement
Designed for dual fuel use with capability of switching between natural gas and HFO while still operating under load
HFO is often used as a backup fuel for peaking power plants or when natural gas supply is interruptible
Within reason, any and all heavier grades of fuel can be used as these are old design slow speed marine diesels that are not sensitive to fuel quality issues
In simple cycle, the 701DS is a reliable machine with 127,800 kW net power output at ISO conditions and 32% efficiency, which can serve as low cost machine for peaking services
In combined cycle it gives excellent fuel savings with 52% efficiency in base load operations
Upgrade And Overhaul
Turbocare Spa was contracted to conduct a major overhaul of both generator assemblies including stator and rotor overhauls
Both gas turbine longitudinal sections were upgraded to 127.8 MW, 50 Hz according to the OEM technical specification
The overhaul and upgrade results as well as the aftermath performance test results are available upon request subject to purchase
Standard overhaul warranty provided by Turbocare Spa at ISO conditions: net power output of 127,800 kW; heat rate of 2,664 kcal/kWh
Upgrading warranty provided by Turbocare Spa at ISO conditions guarantees: power increase of 4.2% from original ISO output; heat rate improvement of 0.6% from original ISO output; exhaust temperature increase of 12°C from original ISO output
All figures make reference to ISO conditions, base load, dry natural gas, open cycle and with GT auxiliaries only
Inspection And Documentation
The gas turbines were inspected by two independent verification authorities
A valuation report was prepared by Combustion, Energy & Steam Specialist Limited on March 31, 2007
A visual inspection was performed by Lloyds Register on September 8, 2008
Inspection reports, as well as maintenance history, performance upgrade results and supported warranties can be made available upon request
Optional Insurance And Warranty
An optional plant insurance and warranty period through an operation and maintenance contract, which will not exceed the calendar date in which one of the following events will first occur: 8,000 equivalent hours; 12 months from the GT first firing
Configuration And Application
The gas turbines are suitable for including in a 400 MW power plant comprising of: two Siemens Westinghouse 701DS gas turbines, a 140 MW steam turbine, two HRSGs
Heat rate, 6.92 MJ/kWhe at gas LHV basis
Two HRSGs can be designed, installed and commissioned within 20-24 months from contract signing
The application of 701DS in power industry will give producers an advantage of economic flexibility switching to fuel oil when natural gas prices become expensive
